Mentoring, Teaching & Editing

I was a teacher long before I published my first book, but I was a writer before I ever taught. The two passions are inseparable in my mind, and they fuel each other so organically.

Since the publication of ZIG-ZAG BOY, my work is more centred around teaching autobiographically informed writing, especially in the genre of mental health narrative.

I work one to one as a mentor supporting people to mine their experience of living through altered states/psychosis or witnessing the journey as a loved one.

I can help with the writing process, editing, and exploring routes to publication.

As a mother who has witnessed my son’s diagnosis of psychosis and journeyed with him through the archaic systems on both sides of the Atlantic, I have a deep understanding of the experience.

This empathy coupled with my writing and teaching qualifications give me the confidence to support my students to explore what happened to them and put it into words.

TESTIMONIALS FROM MY STUDENTS:

“As an absolute beginner to writing workshops, I was unsure what to expect. With Tanya’s expert guidance and experience as an author my confidence has increased, and I feel encouraged to continue my work.

“The group provided a strong supportive network, bound by similar experiences which I found invaluable. If you are a novice and just considering writing or if you are close to publishing, Tanya’s course is highly recommended.”
Sally Irwin-Stilgoe

“It has been a privilege to work with Tanya, I first met her at the workshop with Nathan Filer at Bath Spa university in June 2023 where I met a group of amazing women, who, like me have a family member who has experienced psychosis.

“I have never felt safer or better understood in any group I’ve been part of. Writing has always been therapy for me, but sharing our stories in this way is both powerful and uplifting and inspires me to continue to write and to complete the tale of my journey with my son.”
Linda McAvoy

“Tanya’s unique blend of warmth, wisdom and knowledge about writing make her a delight to work with and learn from. She tunes into the needs of her students with empathy and respect and is willing to be flexible within the structure of the sessions. Tanya’s own vulnerability and strength in sharing her story and process give permission to others to share whatever is appropriate for them.

“There are no pressures, expectations or judgements and everyone’s input, whether beginner or experienced writer, is welcomed and celebrated.

“The course became a precious, mutually encouraging fortnightly respite for me, to be spent with friends – most of whom I hadn’t met in person.”
